Shoots: Get ahead for 2025 with our pen scoring system

Now is the time to take stock of the recent season and review release pens so there is ample time to make any changes. Doing these reviews makes sure there is the highest calibre of husbandry for our released game birds and supports the drive to achieve the highest health and welfare standards.

Why Pen Score?

  • Reduce the spread of disease
  • Creates an environment that is the most natural the birds can have, that is safe and allows them to be stress-free as much as possible
  • Drives husbandry standards
  • Helps you understand which pens to make changes to first by starting with the one with the lowest score

What does pen scoring involve?

Your vet will visit your site and do a thorough review of the release pens. They will assess the current or discuss the planned set up and provide you with an overall score. Where adjustments can be made to improve your site – you’ll get a clear set of recommendations that you’re able to work through.

Areas that are assessed

Even if your equipment has now been stored – your previous or planned set up can be discussed.

  • Feeders and drinkers: This includes making sure they support the transition from rear to release, are readily available and well positioned
  • Water: To make sure it’s suitable, controlled and can be medicated
  • Food: Does it support the transition from rear to release
  • Roosting areas: Is there a sufficient area for this and of the right type
  • Covered area: Is the cover provided right to support the birds’ natural behaviour as well as protecting them from the elements
  • Open area: Its location and vegetation
  • Pen conditions: General conditions are checked – including any evidence of contamination, stocking density etc
  • Poults at release: The transition to the pen will be reviewed
  • Predator and vermin control
  • How the birds are supervised after release
