Veterinary Surgeon Ben South joined St David’s Poultry Team in 2016. He discusses what he likes about working for the business and in particular, working for an independent practice.
” I am lucky enough to currently find myself working in the commercial poultry sector which, without doubt, is undervalued and under taught at an undergraduate level. The daily poultry work is task based rather than timed constrained, completing pre-scheduled site visits within the day. This structure is rare to find outside of the profession. I enjoy the direct approach we have to diagnosis and care completing onsite post mortems and running our own laboratory work. The poultry industry has great respect for vets and understands the importance of our support. The industry is leading the way in livestock production, welfare and antibiotic reduction, yet the level of naivety that both the general public and other vets still have towards poultry production always surprises me.
The practice I work for is proud to be private and relishes the ability to explore new initiatives within the industry. PrognostiX is just one example, utilising wireless sensor technology to aid vets in their ability to predict health and prevent disease outbreaks on farm. I enjoy the opportunity to challenge my peers and present new ideas directly to the owners. Of course there are times where I will get things wrong as I continue to learn, but with the close support of the rest of the team I can only improve and learn from my experiences.
Working in private practice provides more opportunities to progress in my career and gain more responsibility within the practice as my experience and confidence grows.”
