Joint Communication on Antibiotic Reduction - 2020

Over the last three years we have already cut antibiotic (AB) use in UK game birds by around 50%, however, as announced in this year’s Joint Communication, antibiotic use in game birds must fall further!

Along with the rest of the industry, we want to drive down the use of AB’s in the sector. As a practice, St David’s have been heavily involved in the collection of data on AB use, as well as new industry innovations, equipment and husbandry methods designed to further aid AB reduction. With practice bases and vets working across the UK, we have the combined knowledge and experience to be at the forefront of innovation and new research that we can share directly with our clients.

The Joint Communication, which is the product of a number of organisations within the industry coming to together on this topic, heavily advises on the importance of upholding the correct prescription of AB’s, and the enforcement on new laws on use, carriage and storage. This, alongside an industry wide effort to improve husbandry and alignment of these standards through BGA membership, will cumulatively help the game bird sector deliver in meeting the further 40% reduction in AB use by 1st January 2024.

You can read the Joint Communication and letter from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) here that advises on the correct prescribing and supply for AB for game birds. If you would like any further information on the Joint Communication, or advice on strategies to help reduce the use of AB for your game farm or shoot, please speak to your St David’s vet.
