As attention turns to site set up, doing a thorough clean of the sheds and equipment is a priority, and supports chicks getting off to the best possible start.
Fundamental to any cleaning programme is good quality products, including Defra-approved disinfectants, applied in the right way, at the right concentration for the site and situation.

Wild animals are likely to have used the sheds for shelter over the last few months, meaning that other biosecurity risks – such as avian influenza – need to be targeted.
The 3Ds protocol
Combined with the right products, it’s also important to follow the 3D’s protocol:
Drench | Detergent | Disinfectant
As a reminder:
DRENCH
- Blast all surfaces with water, removing as much organic matter from the surfaces as possible
DETERGENT
- Apply a high foaming detergent, such as TopFoam®
- Leave as per the instructions, to break down fats and grease
- Increase the water pressure and wash off
- Leave to dry and relocate
DISINFECT
- With a Defra approved disinfectant
Secondary disinfection with thermal fogging
Our field services team also offer secondary disinfection with thermal fogging.
Thermal fogging with Halamid forces the disinfectant into every crack in the walls, through and under the roof sheeting, to give everywhere a good covering.
A big benefit of using Halamid, is the speed at which it disinfects – it needs a maximum of two hours to be fully effective, before ventilation.
Fogging should be carried out when the sheds have been built, equipment is in – including bedding – but before chick paper is placed.
