“I had a long-held desire to join the veterinary profession – stemming back to when I was in seventh or eighth grade when a vet visited a farm I was staying at. I was always curious about the work they were doing, constantly asking questions and I spent an ever-increasing amount of time with the animals. From that my interest in herd health and individual treatment was well and truly sparked and I continued to learn as much as I could about the profession.
After qualifying in 2020, I started my career as a state veterinarian in South Africa, that included working with small holder poultry farmers. Commercial poultry production beckoned soon after.
My particular area of interest is gut health as I believe this plays a key role in the birds’ overall performance and/or productivity. With a vastly dynamic environment, this provides us with the chance to continue to innovate our approach bird health and welfare – especially when it comes to alternatives to antimicrobial use.”
