Spironucleus

Probably more commonly known as Hexamita. It is a single cell organism which parasites the intestines. It can cause very high mortality in rear and the post release period. Especially when birds are stressed. Birds show a watery diarrhoea and serious weight loss. Mortality is usually due to dehydration. Birds should have easy access to plenty of drinking water. Electrolytes are important in the recovery of the birds. The only product which was specifically for treating Spironucleus, Emtryl, has been banned years ago so we have to make do with possibly less effective alternatives. Prevention should entail good hygienic management practices and reduction of stress as much as possible.
